Some Like it Hot, and that's why I like Marilyn

For so long, I thought Marilyn Monroe was overrated, because everyone loved her. I never saw any of her movies and would rarely look twice when I would see a photograph of her. During my last semester at Drake, I took a class called Women and Film in which we studied mostly old Hollywood films for the first half of the semester. In that first half, we spent a bit of time on Ms. Monroe herself. In that short period, I realized she was not only an intelligent woman, but also that she was truly the beauty everyone sees so often. I used to think she wasn't very beautiful, but the more and more I look at her, the more I fall in love.

The two symbols of old Hollywood that we most commonly see today (and are most recognized) are Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn (of course). Personally, I do NOT like Audrey Hepburn, and I think she is quite mousy and homely. There is nothing sexy to me about her. Yeah yeah, I know you Audrey lovers out there will tell me her "typically unattractive" looks are what makes her so sexy, but I just think she has become the poster girl for all of those women who couldn't be like Marilyn. Those strong, smart, sophisticated, SEXY, women, who, for one reason or another, were wanted by all men, and all women wanted to be her. Marilyn wasn't a slut (though she did have a proven relationship with JFK), and it is quite sad that many people believe her coy sexual appeal (and sexual intelligence) was simply that of street walkers. Just because someone wears makeup and heels instead of grows out their eyebrows and looks like a 12 year old boy (another Audrey punch, obviously) is nothing to sneer at. At any rate, this is to pay homage and respect to a woman who, by many, do not give her all that she deserves.

You can be mad that I don't like Audrey, but please do not try to convince me that she is a great actress--I know she is/was a talented actress--I like some of her movies, especially Wait Until Dark (1967), and Funny Face (1957), but I will never find anything attractive about her physically.

And that's my rant.

Whenever I see pictures of Marilyn Monroe, I remember that she was around a size 6 (or so they say). It's weird how our standard of beauty has changed, but she still appeals to a lot of people with her curvy figure!

Aw. I think I can relate more to Audrey Hepburn, though... I sort of look like a 12 year old boy and don't feel like Victoria's Secret model sexy, so... I can relate. haha.

Oh, this is just sad. You're another one of 'those' girls. =( You look up to the queen of sluts and insecurity because you can relate to her. MM IS so hideously overrated it's saddening. She was the opposite of confident and sexy. She was insecure and rightfully so- the girl was a porker in her later years with a boyish face caked in makeup in a poor attempt to hide that, went after other ladies' men cuz she didn't know how to get her own, she was weak and refused to use that mind of hers that was apparently so bright, she was disgustly selfish and spoiled, a drunken pothead, a pain in the butt to work with- yeesh, I could go on! Nothing beautiful about a person so ugly on the inside as well as out. People love to make her selfish, drug-filled tale one of pure tragedy as if she were a martyr but the fact is it was her own self-indulgent choices that led to her downfall.

And please- Audrey Hepburn HOMELY or BOYISH? Can I have whatever you're all smoking? Honestly, you sound quite jealous as all hale (and I passionately hate that word and use it VERY reluctantly). In my experience the only people who dare to insult such a attractive, selfless person are typically insecure, often overweight girls who can't stand themselves- and rightfully so. You are not beautiful on the inside so no wonder you love someone who also isn't. Slutty, b!tchy girls are always insecure, hence why they are slutty and b!tchy, and love to pretend that's "confidence" and "strength" when deep down they know it is the exact opposite. Audrey was almost TOO sexy- she was modest and knew how to be sexy (even though she thought she was unattractive) without being a slut, something MM never learned. It's a pretty weak, trashy girl if she has nothing but her body to attract someone or feel good about herself.

So yeah, if worshipping an unattractive, weak homewrecker with no class and putting down one of the most beautiful, exotic, anti-Marilyn women of all time makes you feel all powerful and whatever and helps you to sleep at night, continue with this catty pettiness.

And here's MY opinion on Marilyn =) feel free to read, by all means. http://recognizablefruits.blogspot.com/2010/06/marilyn-monroe-as-role-model-yeah-no.html

Ewwww! Like SOOO totally ugly! Like, WHAT are men THINKING, being attracted to such a mouse?! Those perfect doe eyes, full lips, pretty cheekbones, long legs, the tiny waist, perky breasts- sick! XP And btw, Audrey wore makeup and heels too- unlike Marilyn, *she* didn't need them. She was so naturally sexy and attractive and men loved her that way, not because she spread her legs for movies.

Ruthven, I appreciate your comments and I don't believe in censoring anything (unless it is spam), so I am publishing it. I obviously do not agree with you, but it's slightly confusing that you don't even allow comments on your blog (at least I am unable to comment) and I have no other way of contacting you with any type of reply. I just wish you would have attacked me through an email if you had such a problem with an opinion on a blog that only a few dozen people keep up with. Please, if you'd like to get on your soap box again, spare the people who actual appreciate an opposing viewpoint from their own--instead of putting them in a digital corner--and contact me through email: caitlin.augusta@gmail.com
Thank you.

I agree, no disrespect meant to Audrey Hepburn but she is hugely overrated in every department.
